ALEX GURNEY QUALIFIES THIRD FOR BARBER DODGE SEASON-FINALE
MONTEREY, Calif. (October 24, 1998) -- Alex Gurney qualified his #27 Team KOOL Green Reynard-Dodge third for Sunday's Barber Dodge Pro Series season-finale at Laguna Seca Raceway. Gurney's fastest lap was a 1:26.271 (93.389) set in this morning's first qualifying session. Rain showers and cool, cloudy weather followed this morning's session and created different track conditions for the afternoon's final qualifying. None of the top-five qualifiers were able to improve on their morning times.
Will Langhorne set a new track record and earned the pole for tomorrow's race, with a lap of 1:25.424 (94.315 mph) around the 2.238-mile circuit. Series points leader Todd Snyder, who had established the former track record with his pole-winning time at Laguna Seca in September, will line up alongside Langhorne after setting a fast lap of 1:25.770 (93.935 mph).
Chris Simmons, who is the only other driver with a shot at the title, set the sixth fastest time of the day (1:26.409 = 93.240 mph).
ALEX GURNEY, #27 TEAM KOOL GREEN REYNARD-DODGE, Qualified third with a lap of 1:26.271 (93.389 mph):
"I'm very pleased with the position and I'm excited about tomorrow's race. This series is so competitive that even if you're only a half-second off the pace you'll be in12th place or lower. I've been able to find that last little bit with the car recently that moves me up among the leaders (Alex qualified on the pole and finished fourth last week at Homestead, Fla.) I'm finally beginning to jell with the car and I'm feeling more comfortable as I learn the circuits."
