Craig Duerson doesn't like to waste time. He secured the fastest lap of today's qualifying session on lap 2 with a time of 2:33.081 sec. and made it stick to earn the pole for Round 11 of the Formula Dodge National Championship. Along with the prime spot, Duerson, one of five contenders for the Championship heading into the weekend, earns 1 point toward the overall tally. Anthony Simone and Christian Szymczak had the majority of the session, about 9 laps, to beat Duerson's time but couldn't upset the Floridian. Simone will start from second on the grid, Szymczak from third.

Today's 30 minute qualifying session, under partially cloudy skies, was notable for markedly fast lap times. The difference can be attributed to this year's use of the new Dodge R/T 2000 that replaced last year's Formula Dodge race car. The new ride was a screaming three seconds quicker around the 4.0 mile circuit than last year's entrant under the same course conditions. Additionally, long straights on the long course created several draft opportunities and contributed to greater speeds.

As is common in Formula Dodge competition, the qualifying session was competitive as lap times indicate. The top seven racers took the checkered flag within one second of the provisional pole sitter. Duerson, Simone, Szymczak, along with Bryan Sellers and Jon Morley are five of the sixteen entrants with a realistic shot at the title. While Duerson made things easier with his result, Morley exacted just the opposite. He suffered an uncharacteristic result, finishing last in the session.

Simone, the current Championship points leader, holds a 35 point margin over Sellers. Duerson trails Sellers by eight points after today's one point gain for earning pole position.
