Simmons Surprises, Takes Barber Dodge Pole

DETROIT, Mich. (June 6, from Rick Roso) - Barber Dodge Pro Series rookie Jeff Simmons of Granby, Conn., surprised the veterans when he took the pole position for Sunday's 40-minute race at the ITT Automotive Detroit Grand Prix, round three of the $1.1M 1998 championship. For Simmons, 21, it is his first ever race in the close confines of a temporary street course. Will Langhorne, a second year veteran, will start alongside Simmons, while another rookie, Sepp Koster of The Netherlands, the polesitter in round one at Sebring in March, is third. Points leader Todd Snyder qualified sixth, and round two winner Thomas Schie 10th. The top 15 drivers qualified within one second of each other on Detroit's newly configured, 2.35-mile Grand Prix circuit.

Starting order following Barber Dodge final qualifying at the ITT Automotive Detroit Grand Prix. Qualifying position, driver, hometown or country, lap time and average miles per hour around 2.35-mile, 14-turn temporary street course. All cars identical Reynard Dodge V6, open-wheel, single-seat race cars on Michelin racing tires.
