If the performances of several of the rookie Formula Dodge National Championship Presented by RACER pilots is a sign of what is to come, the battle for the right to be called the National Champion is just heating up. Californian Kevin Christensen drove a powerhouse race to the top step of the podium in a powerhouse drive, while several other rookie drivers showed strong signs of promise.

Kevin Christensen, 20, used all of his skills and racecraft learned over years of karting to earn a dramatic win this weekend in round six of the Formula Dodge National Championship at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisc. Starting in the 6th position, he actually fell backwards to 7th on lap six but began charging up through the field with a series of quick, consistent laps and some nifty passes. Lap 18, the final lap, saw his efforts come to fruition when he passed leader Craig Duerson for a decisive victory. Christensen, one of the Skip Barber Karting Scholarship recipients, notched his first racing win in something other than a kart.

Craig Duerson of St. Petersburg, Fla., recovered nicely from his last lap incident on Saturday and posted a strong drive to come home in second place. He garnered some much needed points to keep him in the chase for the overall crown.

Finishing a strong third and on the podium for the first time was Scott Presti. After starting 14th on the grid, he whittled his way through the field and was in a prime position when a last lap, last corner contact between then third-placed Brian Angen and then fourth-placed Bryan Sellers opened the door to the podium. Presti pounced on the opportunity as did rookie Dan Di Leo. The fourth-place finish combined with his sixth place Saturday put the young Canadian right back into the points fight.

The next stop on the calendar for the Formula Dodge National Championship is at Putnam Park, Ind. on August 5th and 6th. The veterans better keep their eyes on their mirrors because the rookies have begun their charge
