COMING OFF SOUTHERN TITLE RUN, ASHLEY FREIBERG READY FOR BARBER NATIONAL RACE THIS WEEKEND
Teenager Seeks First Barber National Victory at VIR
ALTON, Va. (April 21, 2010) -- After winning the Skip Barber Southern Regional title two weeks ago, Ashley Freiberg is seeking another victory this weekend (April 24-25) at Virginia International Raceway.
The teenager from Homer Glen, Ill., comes to VIR for the BFGoodrich Skip Barber National Series presented by Mazda two-race weekend after clinching the Barber Southern championship with six wins in 12 races this year.
Freiberg (pronounced FRY-BERG), a five-time WKA karting champion, hopes for better luck in the two National races following a tough weekend at Sebring International Raceway last month. Freiberg currently ranks seventh in the National standings following the first four events.
"The last Barber National weekend was pretty frustrating for me," admitted Ashley. "I was in position to win one of the races and was knocked out. The National guys were playing pretty rough that weekend. I'll be better prepared this time."
Freiberg was a rookie in the Barber National Series last year and scored a podium finish at Road America. She placed sixth in the final National points.
This year, Freiberg won the Southern regional title two weeks ago and gained some needed track time for her national series run.
"I think it was important to get more track time in the winter months," Freiberg said. "It was a good experience to get back on the track. Now, after the Southern series, I am concentrating on the Barber National Series. I continue to learn with these cars after moving up from karts."
Freiberg will practice Thursday at VIR with qualifying set for Friday, as the two Barber events are part of the Bosch 250 Grand-Am sports car weekend.
The two Barber National races are scheduled for Saturday (April 24) at 9 a.m. (EDT) and Sunday (April 25) at 2 p.m.
"I have raced at VIR numerous times in karts and it is a fun track, said Freiberg about the 3.27-mile, 17-turn circuit. "But it also will be a drafting track. So you have to play a patient game before making your moves. If you get too anxious, you could lose the draft and drop back very quickly. It is so mental as well as physical with the Barber national series. But I think I am gaining more experience to race up front at the national races. It should be an exciting weekend."
Freiberg is sponsored by Akzo Nobel N.V., the world's leading decorative paints company as well as the leading salt specialist. The Dutch conglomerate, headquartered in Amsterdam, has activities in 80 countries and employs about 60.000 people in the fields of decorative paints, performance coatings and specialty chemicals.
