23th August 2001 - FRANCK MONTAGNY (Epsilon by Graff) has been the quickest driver in the first day of private tests held today in the Frech track of Magny Cours.
The Frenchman, with used tyres, lapped in 1.30.523 (169.018 km/h) beating the unofficial record stablished by his country-mate Patrice Gay last year during Free Practice (1.30.814/168.470 km/h) achieved under wet conditions. Yet the official record of the Series belongs to Antonio Garcia.
Next week, and for its second year, this track, said to belong to the modern era of Formula One, will hold the sixth meeting of the Open Telefonica (Formula Nissan) Single-Seater Series. Teams and drivers are working hard , catching up the rythm after the summer pause.
The Young Southafrican Tomas Scheckter (Vergani Racing) was second fastest, while Matteo Bobbi (ITA) from the Spanish Team Adrian Campos Motorsport, has achieve an impressive third time.
Equiality has dominated in the list of times, packing the first 7 drivers in the same second. The best Spaniard was the REPSOL_YPF driver, Ángel Burgueño.
Track temperature reached the 40 degrees Celsius!! in a day were not even one single cloud was to be seen. No major incidents, besides a little excursion of the Italian Andrea Bellichi (Sitec Motorsport), and some mechanical problems affecting the Nissan of the portuguese Manuel Giao (Fama Motorsport)
