THE OPEN TELEFONICA NISSAN TO VISIT PORTUGAL FOR THE FIRST TIME
The Autodromo Fernanda Pires da Silva in Estoril to host second round of series next 21-22 April The Spanish federation Court of Appeal to decide about 'Giao's affair' next week.
April, 11.- Frenchman Franck Montagny (Epsilon by Graff) will arrive in Portugal as series leader after his double win last April, 1st at Jarama. Montagny leads the overall with 42 points, ten more than Spaniard Rafael Sarandeses (Adrian Campos Motorsport). Nevertheless, standings are in a su b iudice status, due to the appeal presented by Italian team Scuderia Fama after the 20-second penalty imposed to driver Manuel Giao in the first race at Jarama.
Apelacion en proceso Stewards considered that Giao had zigzagged to avoid being overtaken by Spaniard Angel Burgueno. The Portuguese believes it all was just the other way round. "The marshall got confused", said Giao, "because it was Burgueno who zigzagged trying to overtake me. My race line was straight and clean during the whole race. Moreover", added the Portuguese, "even Burgueno stated in writing at the end of the race that I had never tried to prevent him from overtaking by means of unfair manoeuvering". The Court of Appeal of the Spanish Federation is likely to decide about thi s matter next week, prior to the event at Estoril. Should the appeal be accepted, Manuel Giao would climb from 8th to third in the Open Telefonica overall standings with 20 points, just behind leader Montagny (42) and Sarandeses (32).
Previous references for Open Telefonica cars and drivers at Estoril are private testing sessions held in February, 16-17 only. Best lap times were Tomas Scheckter's and Manuel Giao's (1.32.9), ahead of Portuguese Paulo Alho (1.33.1) and Spaniard Victor Ordoñez (1.33.2). Current series leader, Frenchman Franck Montagny, did not take part. His performance at Estoril to be discovered on Friday's two-hour collective testing.
