30 September 2001- After four years of Championship, the Open Telefonica 2001 has gathered 65,000 people who came to watch the two splendid victories of Tomas Scheckter and Franck Montagny. Both drivers will have to fight for the Title in the Circuit of Valencia (28th October), where the Final Meeting will take place. In 2002, RPM Racing will start a new Championship with three different categories.
Tomas Scheckter has lived a strange race day. He was briliant in the first meeting. He started first and he leaded clearly until the end. In the first race he has established a new official record of the Series: the fastest lap of a Coloni Nissan CN1/C in the GP Circuit of Catalunya, by lapping 1.36.488 (176.366 km/h). The RSA driver improved three tenths his best register obtained during Qualifying 1, yesterday. But the second race was just a nightmare. Tomas did a bad start and when he was trying to catch up Rafael Sarandeses, both cars had a bad contact during the fourth lap. Scheckter had to pit several times and finally retired.
The Repsol YPF driver Angel Burgueño, and Rafael Sarandeses, (Adrian Campos Motorsport), where second and third respectively in the first race. This two Spaniard drivers are fighting for the 4th position in the Overall, and try to become the best Spanish driver in the 2001 Series. Teo Bobbi, the Italian driver in Adrian Campos Motorsports, suffered all sort of technical problems and he could not finish any of the races "I feel very upset. The Team is unable to find what is happening with my car"
In Race 2, Franck Montagny did a perfect start (from the second row of the grid), and got first at the end of the main track. He finished first, with 15 seconds of difference from the second classified, his French mate Jean Christophe Ravier, followed by Burgueño, third. But it haven't been an easy week-end for the current leader, as he explains: "We had a lot of technical problems during Qualifying, so we had to work with the same set up that we had when we were here for Collective Tests. It didn't work out well for the first race, but after changing everything in the car, we a achieve a good set up, although we were not very quick. In Valencia, we must win.". Geoffrey Dellus, the other Epsilon Driver, after a DNF in the first race, finished fifth in the Second Race, while Ravier adds another podium to the Open Telefonica stats (3 podiums in 2000). 1/1
After a 7th position in the First Race, Belicchi (SITEC Motorsport), finish in the gravel while he was fighting for the fourth position with Burgueño and Porteiro. The Vergani Racing driver Santiago Porteiro did a splendid work finishing in 4th position in both races.Milka Duno, the single lady participating in the Series, seemed also to improve her performances. The Venezuelan driver suffered an accident yesterday as one of the tyres went out of the trim.
Team GD Racing, backed by PSN, the Panamerican Sports Network Company, had the Argentinians Nicolas Filiberti and Leandro Iglesias again in top ten positions. Iglesias and Filiberti are 14th and 15th in the Overall
Manuel Giao was excluded from the two races as his car was found to use a no official clutch pump
