Urlin third in USFF2000 Championship.

Toronto, Ontario (October 28, 2002): JW Urlin of London, Ontario, has claimed third in the US Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship. He secured the place by finishing fourth and fifth in a pair of season-ending races at the 5.263-km Virginia International Raceway near Alton, Virginia, Saturday and Sunday.

Urlin started brilliantly by claiming his first ever USFF2000 pole position on a cold and damp Friday afternoon. He reinforced his dominance of the 24-car field by repeating that feat in the rain on Saturday morning, putting his Budget Rent-A-Car / Mygale Cars machine on pole for both of the weekend's races.

Unfortunately, he was not able to convert either pole into his first series win. In race one, held Saturday afternoon, he dropped to second at the start, then was pushed off the track on the second lap and fell to eighth. He recovered to finish fifth and, although he was somewhat disappointed with the result, he said he didn't have the right set-up and was not likely to win anyway.

Race two, on Sunday morning, saw him get away to a better start, holding the lead and pulling away during the first lap. At the completion of that lap, however, a yellow flag was out at the starter's post signalling a caution at turn one. Urlin, unfortunately, mistook the yellow for a full-course caution and slowed looking for the pace car and expecting the field to regroup. His mistake cost him dearly as cars rocketed past at unabated speed. When the checkered flag waved at the end of the fifteen-lap race, Urlin was fourth.

"I'm disappointed that I wasn't able to get a win after taking pole for both races," said Urlin, "But I beat the people I needed to beat and got third in the championship. It felt fantastic to take the poles. The track was very tricky on Friday and it was raining on Saturday so it was nice to do so well in those conditions. Dan Campbell (Urlin's engineer) gave me a great set up and made my job easy. Even though it was slippery, the car was beautiful to drive.

"It's been a good year and it was very interesting to work with Mygale developing their chassis," he added. "Hopefully, the work we did has brought some attention to the car and there will be more Mygales on the grid next year. I want to thank Mygale and Budget for their support, and especially wish to thank Dan Campbell and my dad for all their hard work at the races. The three of us made a great team."

Urlin's record in fourteen races this year includes nine top-five finishes, with two pole positions. Among Urlin's winnings for claiming third in the Zetec Championship is a Formula Atlantic test. In addition to finishing third in the Zetec Championship (encompassing both road and oval races) Urlin claimed second in the USFF2000 Oval Championship which concluded earlier in the season.
