JW Urlin is set to begin his second season of competition in the exciting US Formula 2000 National Championship (USF2000). The series will take the London, Ontario, native to top motorsport venues across the continent, beginning in Homestead, just south of Miami, Florida, this weekend.
The eighteen-year-old, who started racing karts when he was eight, completed his first full season of car racing in USF2000 last year. With many karting titles to his credit, including eight Canadian Grand National Championships and a North American Karting Championship, it was time to move on to bigger things.
After winning a regional Formula 2000 race on his first attempt, JW skipped the customary first step of Formula 1600 and leapt straight to the high-profile USF2000 series. With a relatively small team, run by his father Russ -a former stock car racer well known in Canada- the young racer spent the year getting acclimatized to car racing. Scoring better and better results as he gained experience, he finished the year with a sixth-place finish in a race at Indianapolis Raceway Park.
Entering his second year of USF2000 racing, JW hopes to be running with the leaders and score podium finishes on a regular basis.
His Budget Car Rental / OTM Motorsports team will once again be headed by his father and they realize they are David taking on several Goliaths in well-funded multi-car teams.
"The bigger teams are likely to control most of the races," JW said, "But, I’m hoping we can give them a good run for their money. Hopefully, the Budget / OTM team will get the better of them once or twice."
The USF2000 series begins this Saturday and runs to mid-September.
