FAIRFIELD, N.J. (April 24, 2000)—This past weekend, U.S. F2000 National Championship alumni scored a victory in Grand American Road Racing Championship and a podium finish in the Indy Racing Northern Light Series. Driving a Chevrolet Magnum, 1998 U.S. F2000 runner-up Ryan Hampton and fellow alumnus Larry Oberto won the Grand-Am SportsRacing II class at the Sun Automotive 200 at Phoenix international Raceway. Racing for current U.S. F2000 team Archangel Motorsports, the duo finished tenth overall in their first Grand-Am event. Hampton and Oberto now lead the newly formed SportsRacing II point Standings. "It's a great way to start our Grand-Am season," said Hampton. "We should have our new Lola at Homestead, and look to continue our run for the title." Once again, U.S. F2000 alumni were at the forefront of the Indy Racing Northern Light Series this past weekend. At the Vegas Indy 300, alumni captured four of the top-10 finishing positions, led by rookie Sam Hornish Jr., who finished a career-high third. Also posting a career-high finish was fellow rookie Jeret Schroeder, who finished fourth. Schroeder now leads Hornish Jr. in the rookie point standings 61-58. Both Robby McGehee and defending Champion Greg Ray led the race early on, finishing sixth and ninth respectively. "It was a great day," said Hornish Jr, who finished seventh in the 1998 U.S. F2000 standings. "I never expected any of this. We knew running the '99 car we would have trouble in qualifying, but that we could make up some ground in the race." "I've led every race this year," said McGehee, who finished third in the 1998 U.S. F2000 points. "I plan to lead lap 200 at Indianapolis." The next race on the IRNLS schedule is the prestigious Indianapolis 500, May 28. Currently, six U.S. F2000 alumni have entered the race.
