BRASELTON, GA. (October 15, 2003) -Westley Barber, of Saffron, England, captured the pole for Round Eleven of the 2003 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship at the Road Atlanta. Jonathan Bomarito, of Monterey, Calif., captured the pole for Round twelve. Completing the top-three for Round Eleven is Bomarito and Andy Brumbaugh, of Blythewood, S.C. Completing the top-three for Round Twelve is Barber and Charlie Kimball, of Camarillo, Calif. The top ACC qualifier for both rounds is Chris Dona, of Sandown, N.H. In perfect sunny, but cool conditions, qualifying for race one of the season-finale doubleheader got underway just prior to lunch. Having had four half-hour test sessions on Tuesday, the drivers quickly got up to speed. Posting significantly faster times, than in testing, championship leader Barber moved to the top of the speed charts early in the session. Driving the No. 32 Cooper Zeon Cape Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, Barber was the first driver to post a sub 1:24.0 lap, but was quickly joined by Bomarito, in the No. 23 Valley Financial PR1 Motorsports Van Diemen Ford. With several cars making stops for setup changes, the times steadily got better, with the lead duo remaining unchanged. Just past the halfway mark of the session, Brumbaugh, in the No. 86 Andy LLC/Corby Concepts Cape Motorsports Van Diemen Ford moved in third. For the remainder of qualifying, no one was able to better Barber's lap of 1:23.765 (107.443 MPH), giving him his seventh pole of the season.
Following a lengthy break, qualifying for race two began at the end of the day. As in the first qualifying session, the drivers immediately began posting fast laps. Starting where they left off in earlier in the day, Bomarito and Barber jumped to the top of the charts, with Bomarito posting the faster lap. By the midway point of the session, both Bomarito and Barber had bettered the fast time set in qualifying for race one. As the session progressed, the top-five remained unchanged, with Kimball, in the No. 91 Rentvillas.com PR1 Motorsports Van Diemen Ford, posting the third fastest lap. At the checkered flag, Bomarito had captured his fourth pole of the season. With Bomarito and Barber each capturing a pole position, Barber maintains a 14-point lead over Bomarito in the championship.
"The team has done a great job," said Barber, who can clinch the 2003 Zetec Championship with a win in race one. "Getting the pole for the first race, is an ideal way to start the weekend. It's going to be a great race and I think I have the car to win"
"The car was very good," said Bomarito, who won the previous two rounds at Mid-Ohio. "The entire team has worked real hard to put me in position to win the championship. I've got a lot pressure, but it's exciting." "Conditions were perfect this morning," said Brumbaugh, who's third place qualifying position is his best of the season. "This being my last race weekend in the series, I'm looking forward to a good race, in front of a lot of friends and family."
"I'm working hard to make the car better every session," said Kimball, who is the only driver besides Barber and Bomarito who can win the championship. "I think the car is right there and I'm looking forward to the race, which is the fun part."
"It's been an great way to start the season-finale," said Dona, who can clinch the ACC title in race one. "The car has been perfect and I can't wait to go racing."
Completing the top-five in qualifying for race one is Kimball and Robbie Pecorari, of Ashton, Pa., in the No. 26 SAI/Earl's Indy Lucky/Arai Andersen Walko Racing Van Diemen Ford. In qualifying for race two, Pecorari and Brumbaugh complete the top-five.
