SEBRING, FLA. (March 16, 2004) - For the second straight year weather has played a role at the season-opening event at Sebring International Raceway. Originally scheduled for late Tuesday, Qualifying for Round One of the Formula SCCA Championship, part of the Cooper Tires Championship Series, was rescheduled to Wednesday after torrential rain postponed the final test session on Tuesday.
In the opening test session on Tuesday, 29 cars took to the track under overcast skies. Working on race setups, the time difference between the cars shrunk, with the top-seven cars in the Zetec Championship and the top-six in Formula SCCA being within one second of one another. At the end of the session, Bobby Wilson, of Dousman, Wis., had posted the fastest Zetec Championship lap, 2:06.402 (106.378 MPH), while Elivan Goulart, of Huntington, Conn., had posted the fastest Formula SCCA lap, 2:11.955 (100.943 MPH).
As cars progressed to the false grid in preparation for the final test session, a torrential rainstorm hit the 3.7-mile road course. With standing water throughout the track, the session was cancelled. Due to the cancellation, the Cooper Series elected to make the Formula SCCA qualifying session at the end of the day a test session for both the Zetec Championship and Formula SCCA.
Running on a damp, but a quickly drying track, the final test session got underway at the end of the day. Attacking the course, most drivers began posting their quickest times of the event thus far. At the checkered flag, Wade Cunningham, of Auckland, New Zealand, had posted the quickest time of the session, 2:06.734 (105.102 MPH), just slower than the time Wilson's time in the morning session. Posting the fastest time overall for the day in Formula SCCA, was Jonathan Klein, of Long Grove, Ill., with a fast lap of 2:11.504 9101.290 MPH).
"It's fantastic to drive for such a great team like Cape Motorsports," said Wilson. "I know every time I go on track they'll give me a fantastic car. I'll be looking to stay up front again tomorrow in qualifying."
"The rain really helped clean the track," said Klein. "So far we've met all my goals and I'm looking forward to qualifying tomorrow."
Qualifying for both the Zetec Championship and the Formula SCCA begins Wednesday, March 17, 2004, at 8:00 a.m. The opening race for the Formula SCCA Championship follows qualifying later in the day, with the green flag scheduled to fly at 2:00 p.m.
Widely regarded as North America's premier training series, the Cooper Tires Championship Series offers the complete motorsports education, with emphasis on cost-effective racing.
