FAIRFIELD, N.J. (December 14, 2001) - Winter testing for the 2002 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship officially began this past week with a series sanctioned three-day test at Roebling Road, in Savannah, Ga.
Conducted on the 2.02-mile, six turn road course, the goal of the test was to offer both incoming drivers to the series and series veterans, the opportunity to drive with various teams. Providing cars at the test were returning Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship race winners Cape Motorsports, Pabst Racing Services, Roquin Motorsports, as well as podium finishers AIM Autosport, top-10 finishers JDC MotorSports and Lightspeed Motorsports, and newly created John Walko Racing and Aguilar Racing.
Over the three days, nineteen drivers, including the 2000 CART Stars of Tomorrow winner, Jonathan Bomarito; Canadian Formula Ford Champion, Andy Brumbaugh; Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship podium finisher, Paul Dana; Mexican Formula 3 competitor, Gilberto Jiminez; British Formula 3 competitor, Jeffrey Jones; Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship race winner, Tonis Kasemets; Chilean Formula 3 Champion, Pablo Laroquette; Canadian Formula Ford podium finisher, Josh Schreiber; STAR Mazda Competitor, Luis Schiavo; Canadian Formula Ford Runner-Up, Mark Wilkins and 2000 SKUSA S1 Champion, Bobby Wilson, were able to test. While all but two cars were using the current 2.0-liter Formula Continental engine, the majority of the drivers got the chance to test the new 2.0-liter Ford Zetec engine, which will be used in 2002.
The test proved to be an outstanding success, with all the drivers posting competitive times and no major incidents occurring.
"I was very impressed by the quality of drivers that participated in the test," said series owner Jon Baytos. "I believe the combination of the new engine package, along with the level competition among the teams and drivers will make the 2002 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship the most exciting to date."
The Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship will conduct additional pre-season test days following the winter holidays.
