BESNARD EARNS RECORD EIGHTH POLE FOR F2000 FINALE

FOUNTAIN, Colo. (September 26, 1998) -- David Besnard, of Sydney, Australia, captured his record eighth pole for the U.S. F2000 National Championship finale, part of the Children's Hospital Grand Prix of Colorado at Pikes Peak International Raceway.

Driving the No. 13 Primus Racing Karts Van Diemen Ford, Besnard earned his second pole in as many days for the doubleheader weekend with a record lap of 0:54.813 (88.008 mph), breaking the record of 0:55.418 (87.047 mph) he set for today's race he set on Friday. Robby McGehee, of St. Louis, will start second for Sunday's 36-lap, 48.24-mile season finale after turning a lap of 0:54.930 (87.820 mph). In all, 14 drivers eclipsed Besnard's Friday pole time, due largely to cooler weather.

Aaron Justus, of Cardiff By the Sea, Calif., will start third in his first weekend of F2000 competition since 1996, followed by Marc-Antoine Camirand, of Trois-Rivieres, Que., Can., and Rolando Quintanilla, of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. The first 24 cars qualified within one second of the polesitter.

Besnard breaks Steve Knapp's 1996 record of seven poles. Today, Besnard will attempt to tie Chris Simmons' 1993 record of seven wins on a season. If Besnard sweeps both events, he will own the record outright.
