BESNARD TIES SEASON RECORD WITH SEVENTH F2000 POLE

FOUNTAIN, Colo. (September 25, 1998) – David Besnard, of Sydney, Australia, earned his record-tying seventh pole of the season for Saturday's U.S. F2000 National Championship race at the Children's Hospital Grand Prix of Colorado Weekend at Pikes Peak International Raceway.

Besnard, who already clinched the National Championship in Atlanta, August 29, turned a lap of 55.418 seconds (87.047 mph) around the 1.34-mile road course in the No. 13 Primus Racing Karts Van Diemen Ford, edging Tim Duit, of Edmond, Okla., by 0.030-second. Besnard's pole tied the single-season mark of seven set by current Indy Racing League driver Steve Knapp in 1996.

"The record's aren't as important as the thrill of winning races," said Besnard. "But I'd like to see my name in the record books for a long, long time. That would mean a lot."

Besnard can tie Chris Simmons' 1993 record of seven wins in a season with a victory Saturday, and will attempt to own both marks outright after Sunday's final round.

Andy Lally, of Northport, N.Y., will start third, followed by Besnard's teammate Sam Hornish Jr., of Defiance, Ohio, and Aaron Justus, of Cardiff by the Sea, Calif.
