Urlin takes third at the Milwaukee Mile.
Toronto, Ontario (May 31, 2002): JW Urlin stepped on to the podium for the second race in succession with a third-place finish at the Milwaukee Mile this afternoon. The nineteen-year-old driver of the Budget Rent-A-Car / Mygale Cars entry, is rapidly emerging as a championship threat in the US Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship.
"We're getting stronger with every race," the London, Ontario, resident said of his team. "It was rough at the start of the season, but we've got the car figured out now. I would say the car was at about 98% today. It was superb, but there's still a bit more in it."
Urlin started today's 50-lap race at the famous Wisconsin oval from ninth, which was a disappointment after he had been second fastest throughout pre-race test sessions. A blistered tire, following a gamble on qualifying set-up, slowed him just a couple of tenths of a second, but it was enough to cost him several places on the very competitive grid.
After gaining two places on the first lap of the race, Urlin spent nearly 30 laps patiently working his way up to third. Once there, he was able to put some space behind him, but the gap to second was too much to make up in the laps that remained.
"I might have been able to move up faster, but I took my time figuring out the best way to use the draft and timing my passes," said Urlin. "I didn't want to make a mistake and throw it away.
"It was very exciting to race through the pack," he continued, "But, I'm more excited about tomorrow when I will start from third."
Tomorrow's USFF2000 race, another 50-lapper, is scheduled to begin at 3:30pm Central Time. This weekend's USFF2000 races are being run in conjunction with the Miller Lite 225 CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams) event.
