Quote of the race goes to Brands Hatch's own Mark Marchant who was taken out on the 5th lap by fellow second row starter Mikko LEMPINEN. "You overtake on the black stuff, not the f...ing green stuff." Lempinen had attempted a pass at paddock by taking the tightest line possible (ie the grass), sadly this did nothing for his ability to brake or steer.

The 1600 class seems to have deteriorated into a clubmans category as far as the GB drivers are concerened (just look at the age of the chassis). The Scandinavians, for whom this is still a "professional" series, rightfully dominated.

KOLBY and GAY started from the front row, Kolby made a bad start and Gay lept into the lead, and an impressive one it was too, until on his 3rd lap whilst under no real pressure he drove off into the gravel trap at Clearways. This left McGarrity in the lead and Kolby in second. Whilst I attended to a car that had pulled off, someone (Koster?) nerfed Kolby well down the order. This left a trio of cars at the front, McGarrity in the lead, Leinders in 2nd and Santavirta in 3rd. These 3 pulled away from the rest of the field, but there was never more than a few feet between them - an absolute classic Formula Ford race - but it could only end in one way. Leinders was running into the back of McGarrity's gearbox in his efforts to get past or unsettle him, not the fairest of tactics, but common enough in FF.

Santavirta was just that little bit further back watching to see if either made a mistake that would give him an advantage. The positions remained static until the start of the 17th lap when Santavirta decided he had to do somthing himself rather than wait for others to make mistakes. He made a beautiful pass on the outside of Leinders at paddock, and, as he took the wide line through Paddock,he was pushed out wider by Leinders. Leinders had the greater speed and drew back alongside of Santavirta and then attempted to push his way back to the front. A recipe for disaster, neither driver gave way so they interlocked wheels, stayed locked together as one, spun round 180 degrees and rattled along the armco all the way up the hill to Druids. After that it was easy for McGarrity, and he finished a massive (in FF terms) 1.7 seconds ahead of Vinella.

Notice something...... NO BRITS..... In fact there was only one in the race. (Austin Kinsella - finished 15th) Sadly I think F.Ford is on the decline in GB as far as the local drivers are concerned. This is probably because it is no longer a starting formula for the best of the young hopefuls, they seem to be heading into Vauxhall Junior.
