JDC Motorsports Driver Craig Baltzer participated in Rounds 7 and 8 of the Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship series this past weekend in Elkhart Lake Wisconsin at the famed Road America race track. Racing in support of the Champ Car World Series, Baltzer showed his talent for learning new tracks quickly by placing himself in the top 10 for the first three practice sessions. After a night full of thunderstorms on Thursday night, the Zetec's found themselves with a very slippery track for race one Qualifying on Friday morning. The set-up that Baltzer had found in the dry on Thursday did not translate well on the very green race track and the Van Diemen Scholarship Driver could only post a time of 2:15.371 placing him 11th on the Grid. At the start of race one, Baltzer narrowly missed a spinning car which made contact with two others, promoting him three places. As the field streamed around on the opening lap, it encountered a sudden and unexpected rainstorm heading into the carousel turn. Baltzer maneuvered past several surprised cars climbing all the way up to fourth before being caught out himself by conditions in Canada corner. Resting just off course, corner workers had to let the entire field pass before safely pulling out the stuck number 8 Van Diemen. Fortunately the track went full yellow enabling Baltzer to catch back up to the tail end of the pack which was now back under the control of the pace car. On lap 4, the field took the green flag again with Baltzer this time starting from the 24th position. In a showcase of his passing ability, Baltzer picked off 10 cars in the next three laps. The final five laps saw the Superior Tube Products Van Deimen run down the next group of cars and gain another 3 places to eventually finish 11th,taking home 10 championship points along with him.
Qualifying for Race Two went better for the Superior Tube Products/Sparco/Lakefront Technologies/ Decal Works/ JDC Motorsport Driver as Baltzer was able to move up into the top 5 for the first time all weekend. With positions constantly shuffling during the 30 minute session Baltzer ended up posting his fastest lap of the weekend at 2:13.509 placing Baltzer just outside of the top 5 in 6th position. Baltzer again held his position though the opening laps of race two as he held onto the tail of the lead pack. Positions remained unchanged until lap 8 when gearbox failure forced Baltzer to limp the car back to the pits, retiring to an eventual 21st position.
"This was a very tough weekend" said Baltzer "I had hoped for a better introduction for Superior Tube. I am looking forward to getting back to Mid Ohio however. I seemed to run well there, and I was able to find a little bit in the car this weekend that could help me at Mid Ohio. Sixth place wouldn't have been too bad today, but sometimes things break. It was just unfortunate. I did lose a few positions in the overall standings, but if I can put in some good results in the last 4 rounds I can get those positions back very easily. It was a blast getting to race at Road America and I had a lot of fun being a part of the whole Champ Car weekend. Like always I would like to thanks all my partners for all their help and support; Superior Tube Products, Primus Racing, Elan Group, Avon Tires, Sparco, Lakefront Technologies, and Decal Works. See you in Mid Ohio"
Craig Baltzer now finds himself with 86 points placing him 9th in the Overall points standings. Baltzer also finds himself in 6th position in the Greg Moore Rookie of the Year standings. Craig will hit the track next at Mid Ohio for Rounds 9 and 10 taking place with the Bridgestone presents the Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford series August 9th and 10th.
