HAMPTON HAS RECORD-SETTING RUN FOR CHARLOTTE POLE

CONCORD, N.C. (July 24, 1998) - Ryan Hampton, of Glendora, Calif., shattered the all-time series qualifying record to take his first career pole for today's U.S. F2000 National Championship round at the VisionAire 500 weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Driving the No. 88 American Instruments/Body Abuse Tatuus Ford, Hampton turned a lap 132.001 mph around the 1.6-mile modified oval, breaking the former record of 130.879 mph set by Andrea De Lorenzi in 1997. Hampton, who took his first career victory at Charlotte in 1997, will be flanked by teammate Steve Rikert, of Rhinebeck, N.Y.

"Andrea (De Lorenzi) beat me here in the second race in a Tatuus, and now I'm with his team," said Hampton. "The pole is important for a championship point, but at Charlotte, the name of the game is drafting."

Andy Lally, of Northport, N.Y., will start third, followed by point leader David Besnard, of Australia, and Robby McGehee, of St. Louis.
