"ArmsUp Motorsports Captures Five Podiums in Cooper Tires FF2000 Championship"
ELKHART LAKE, Wis. -- ArmsUp Motorsports captured five podium finishes at the final round of the Cooper Tires Formula Ford 2000 Championship at Road America over the past weekend. Run in conjunction with the Champ Car World Series, ArmsUp drivers Steve Welk, Kirk Kindsfater and Jim Victor all delivered podium results. Steve Welk led the team with a second and third place finish in the headline Zetec class in race one and two respectively. Kirk Kindsfater also scored a second in race one and a third place finish in race two in the Gold Cup division for the Formula Continental cars. Jim Victor put in an inspired drive in race two battling back and forth for the lead eventually taking a second place finish in the Gold Cup race on Sunday.
The first race of the weekend was run on Saturday afternoon in near monsoon conditions. For the ArmsUp Motorsports drivers this was great news as both Welk and Kindsfater showed great speed in the rain in testing. At the drop of the green flag Welk immediately moved up from his seventh place grid position. Meanwhile both Victor and Kindsfater were struggling with the massive amounts of spray which was making seeing nearly impossible. As the race went on and the rains increased Welk found himself running in second. Meanwhile Kinsdfater had moved up from his fourth place starting position and Victor had been able to hold onto his fifth place in the Gold Cup class. A late race full course caution would see the race ended at a reduced pace with Welk and Kindsfater both scoring second place finishes in their respective classes. Jim Victor claimed the fifth spot while ArmsUp Motorsports driver Walter Vollrath did solid job in dealing with the difficult conditions until he was hit from behind when a Zetec car could not see him through spray.
Sunday's race two was sunny and cool. The Cooper Tires Formula Ford Championship cars rolled onto the track directly after the Champ Car World Series race. With cars lining up based on their fastest lap from race one, Welk would start third in the Zetec class with Kindfater fourth, Victor sixth and Vollrath ninth in Gold Cup. After the green flag fell Welk would battle early for the lead while Victor and Kindsfater both moved up from their grid positions. As the race went on Welk and Kindsfater would settle into third in their respective classes while Victor in his Citi Group Smith Barney car was engaged in a battle for the Gold Cup class lead with Brian Tomasi. In the end the Victor would just get nipped by Tomasi by under a second at the line. Welk was able to hold off the charging fourth place Zetec car by one tenth of a second at the line to claim his second podium of the weekend. Kindsfater's race ended one spot ahead of where he started taking a third place finish to take his second podium of the weekend. Walter Vollrath continued his steady improvement over the weekend to finish seventh in the Gold Cup class.
"All of our drivers did a great job this weekend," ArmsUp Motorsports owner Gregg Borland said after the event. "Steve, Kirk, Jim and Walter all drove smart and fast in the rain. Jim had an incredible battle for the Gold Cup win on Sunday and that was really exciting to watch. Our crew did a great job and just like last year in the Atlantic Championship we proved we can raise our game to meet any challenge that comes our way."
The ArmsUp Motorsports Formula Continental cars will be back on track in two weeks time at the SCCA National Championship Runoffs. Their Jim Victor will look to improve on his 11th place finish while Kindsfater will make his first start in this historic road racing event.
