KNIGHT SECOND IN OREGON

Christchurch driver Andy Knight scored his best result of the 2006 Cooper Tires Formula Ford 2000 Series to date when he took second place in the opening race of the weekend at Portland International Raceway, Oregon today.

The 20 - year - old had qualified in 5th place on the 27 - car grid in his G.FRO/NAPA Van Diemen as he became acquainted with the twelve turn, 1.964 mile road course.

Knight made a fantastic start in the race slicing through to second place by the first corner. The 22 lap race was punctuated by a safety car period for 7 laps that allowed the field to bunch up, but once the race resumed Knight was able to maintain his second place.

He came under pressure from Californian Robert Podlesni towards the end of the race but managed to hold position and cross the line in second place behind race winner and championship leader J R Hildebrand.

Knight quickly got to grips with the Portland International Raceway and was the best of the G.FRO Team cars and also the highest placed series rookie in the race.

The second race of the weekend follows overnight (New Zealand time).
