Lotus Type 101/2 to make Spa debut... 14 years late!
Friday 22nd August 2003: The type 101 Judd CV powered Lotus, raced by Nelson Piquet in 11 grand prix during 1989, will finally make its racing debut at Spa Francorchamps, just 14 years later than originally anticipated.
The 1989 Lotus type 101 chassis 2, meticulously restored by Classic Team Lotus, will be driven by experienced historic motorsport racer Abba Kogan in next weekends fourth round of the 2003 EuroBOSS Championship. Kogan will be out to improve on the Spa performances in 1989 of both Piquet and Nakajima who, despite a successful Grand Prix season for Team Lotus, failed to qualify for the Belgian Grand Prix.
EuroBOSS, Europe's fastest motor racing series with 15 outright lap records, has been invited to race at Spa to fill the void created by the loss of its 2003 Grand Prix. And with a 16 car grid, many of which boast F1 credentials, the Championship is all set to show the Belgian public that EuroBOSS is spectacular and action all the way.
Roger Cowman, Series Director, 2003 EuroBOSS Championship:
"It is a sign of how far EuroBOSS has come over recent years that we are now regularly racing at Europe's finest circuits. Spa has a magnificent history and is undoubtedly one of the great circuits of the world and we are excited to be able to provide a show for this prestigious meeting."
"We expect to field a grid of 16 wonderful cars including the first ever appearance in EuroBOSS of the Nelson Piquet Lotus. We are extremely grateful to Classic Team Lotus and their Patron, Abba Kogan, for making this possible."
Clive Chapman, Managing Director, Classic Team Lotus:
"We are looking forward to participating in the EuroBOSS Championship for the first time and making up for lost time at Spa. The recent restoration of type 101 chassis 2 in the Works collection was undertaken by Ralph Hudston, an original number 1 mechanic on the car. He will be running Abba for the race in the company of Team Lotus contemporary Chris Dinnage, Classic Team Lotus Team Manager."
"The car has enjoyed a shakedown on the Lotus test track at Hethel and successful tests at Donington and Spa and the EuroBOSS event represents the cars first ever race at Spa. In the 1989 season type 101 performed well throughout even though the front runners enjoyed a significant power advantage. Coincidentally the only low point was a disastrous Belgian Grand Prix for which both Piquet and Nakajima failed to qualify."
The EuroBOSS race at Spa Francorchamps, Belgium, takes place on Sunday 31st August 2003.
