McQUARRIE WINS TRIPLE CROWN FINALE AND CHAMPIONSHIP
Tyler McQuarrie of Walnut Creek, Calif. captured the 1999 Russell Pro Triple Crown Championship Sunday, leading wire-to-wire to win the series finale at Thunderhill Park in Willows, Calif. The Jim Russell World Scholarship winner who recently returned to America from competition in England's Formula Vauxhall Series captured the pole position and led all 20 laps to repeat the win he scored in the series opener at Sears Point Raceway. Nathan Smith of Escalon, Calif., who won round two of the series sponsored by Yokohama at Sears Point and led the standings entering the final race, ran second for the first 14 laps, then lost a wheel but ended up second in the final standings. Timothy Barber took second on the 3-mile circuit ahead of Dave McEntee, Rafael Navarro and David Farley. The original series finale at Irwindale, Calif. October 16 was canceled prior to this past weekend's race at Thunderhill Park.
