Nathan Smith of Escalon, Calif. and Tyler McQuarrie of Walnut Creek, Calif. will square off for the championship of the 1999 Russell/USAC Yokohama "Triple Crown" Pro Championship this Saturday at Thunderhill Park in Willows, Calif. Smith leads McQuarrie, the current Jim Russell World Scholarship Winner, by just two points going into Saturday's race, which will be a 40-minute contest on the 15-turn, 3-mile road circuit. McQuarrie is returning to America from competing in the Formula Vauxhall Series in England where he had varying degrees of success but gained valuable road racing experience. Qualifying sessions are slated both Friday afternoon and Saturday morning prior to the feature event at 12:10 pm Saturday. The Thunderhill race is the final event in the three-race series. The originally-scheduled October 16 race at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway has been removed from the 1999 calendar.
