SMITH ON POLE FOR SECOND RUSSELL/USAC TRIPLE CROWN RACE

Sonoma, CA – Nathan Smith once again captured the pole, and one more point, in the final moments of qualifying for Round 2 of the Russell/USAC Triple Crown Pro Series presented by Yokohama during the American Le Mans Series at Sears Point Raceway. The Escalon, Calif. driver used the first few minutes of the 25-minute session primarily to warm up and check the track conditions. And then he waited. With less than 8 minutes to go, he eased his Nelson Staffing Solutions/Gogdill & Giomi sponsored Formula Russell car out on to the track when no one else was around and cracked off a 1:39.017 lap to start the dog fight for the pole.

Tyler McQuarrie, the fastest driver in morning practice and pole sitter until Smith laid down his fast lap, shot out of the pits to see if he could better his time of 1:39.261 before the checkered flag flew. “I felt I had what I needed in the car to regain the pole and maybe even get into the 38’s, but I made a small mistake in Turn 3 and that was enough to ruin the lap.” McQuarrie wisely returned to the pits with his position secure on the outside of the first row for the 3:05pm start of Sunday’s Race.

Chris Pettet of Napa, Calif. also took a flyer out of the pits after making several changes to his Platinum Autobody sponsored Formula Russell. His last lap of 1:39.373 pushed down Toshi Kanamoto of San Francisco, Calif. to fourth with a 1:39.880 and Novato Calif. driver Dave McEntee in the Edaten Formula Russell with a 1:40.121 to fifth.
