Russell Pro Triple Crown Opens At Mesa Marin With 2 Ladies!

The 2001 USAC Russell Pro Triple Crown Championship opens this weekend at Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif. and drivers will compete in a 50-lapper Saturday on the challenging 1/2-mile paved banking.

This marks the 10th season of Russell Pro Triple Crown racing and it appears that a 10th different champion is inevitable and it just might be a lady!

Randi Pankratz of Atascadero, Calif., daughter of USAC's WorldCom Western Midget Car Champion Wally Pankratz, will be joined in the field by Christine Saunders of Truckee, Calif., whose husband JoJo is also slated to compete.

Tony Hunt, who is competing in this year's Coors Light Silver Bullet Series as well as the Western Sprint Car and WorldCom Western Midget Car Series, won the first "Triple Crown" title in 1992. Other champions have included Jim DeBoer, Case Montgomery, C.J. Mears, Daniel Dror, Ian Lacy, Niklas Loven and Tyler McQuarrie, plus last year's king Timothy Barber. Lacy excelled in the last year's Formula 2000 National Championship winning twice, at Mosport in Canada and at Atlanta, Ga.

Cory Turner of Bakersfield, third-place finisher in last year's "Triple Crown: standings, will also compete.

The series continues with races June 23 and July 22 at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, Calif.
