Caleb Kenney Loses Championship Lead Due to Injury
Caleb Kenney was forced to give up his overall points lead in the SCCA Formula Russell Championship due to a serious automobile accident. Kenney watched the racing action for the first time from the pits, on August 11th and 12th, because of a broken scapula. He was driving in extreme fog and with limited visibility exited the road and dropped 35 feet before hitting a tree. He was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland, CA where he stayed for four days. Kenney suffered multiple fractures, including one to his right scapula, thus impairing his driving abilities.
After only a short time, Kenney has made a great recovery to date and hopes to be back racing in the final rounds of the championship to be held on September 14th & 15th. Kenney heads into the final rounds of the championship with a 29 point disadvantage to series rival Nic LeDuc. Kenney had this to say about the unfortunate situation.
"I feel really lucky to even be alive after the accident! I know that this has been a great year and it's going to be difficult getting back to same level that I was before the accident. But I know with a lot of hard work I can do it. I've had a lot of support from everyone in the racing community and it speaks volumes of how much everyone cares in this sport. I hope to be well enough to make the final round in September and keep building on my great season so far."
