LAS VEGAS, NV (MARCH 23, 1999) As part of its ongoing American Driver Development Program, the Derek Daly Performance Driving Academy announced today that its driver Jeff Shafer will race in the 1999 Formula Palmer Audi Series in England. Shafer, 23, will carry the Academy livery on his car during the season.

The Palmer Audi series, in its second year, is designed to give young drivers an unprecedented chance to advance to Formula One and CART. Using equally prepared Van Dieman/Audi Formula Cars, 24 drivers will battle over a 17 race schedule at such world famous tracks as Silverstone, Donington Park and Brands Hatch.

"I'm looking forward to representing the United States overseas," said Shafer. "This is a great step forward for my career and I want to thank Derek for making it happen."

"We believe it's the proper time for Jeff to step out of his own backyard and into one of the toughest road racing series in the world," comments Academy owner Derek Daly. "I truly believe this gives Jeff the opportunity to mature as a person and driver at an accelerated pace."

Shafer was the winner of the inaugural 1996 American Driver Development Program at the Derek Daly Academy and raced in US F2000 series during the 1997 season, scoring five pole positions and three victories. In 1998, he joined forces with the Arciero Wells/PPI Team in four impressive races in the KOOL Toyota Atlantic Championship, culminating in a dominant performance at Vancouver where he started from the pole and led convincingly.
