Autodrom Most, Czech Republic, Sunday 14th July 2002: Today's fourth round of the NDS EuroBOSS Series, the Czech Superprix, was marred by a crash which resulted in the death of Austrian driver Frederico Careca. Frederico, 58, had started the race from second place on the grid, taken an early lead and was battling with South African Earl Goddard when the incident happened at the first chicane (lap 7). His Arrows Ford HB V8 left the track, clipping the inside kerb and sending the car airborne. The car somersaulted for some distance before being halted by a safety wall.
The race was red flagged and medical staff arrived swiftly on the scene. He had sustained serious neck and chest injuries and was rushed to Most hospital where he remained in a coma. He died at 5.07pm local time.
Frederico Careca began racing at the relatively late age of 34 in Formula 3, Formula 2 and F3000 before taking a break from motorsport between 1987 and 1991. He started competing in EuroBOSS two years ago, driving in the F3000 class before moving up to a 1995 ex-F1 Arrows this year.
