NIK IRUWAN TO RACE FORMULA PALMER AUDI IN 2007
A1GP tester to represent Malaysia in the UK
Malaysian racing driver Nik Iruwan is aiming to beat some of the UK's best young racers in 2007, having signed up for the Formula Palmer Audi Championship.
Iruwan, 21, who tested for his national A1GP team last summer, will compete at eight of the most famous circuits in the UK, including Brands Hatch, Donington Park and Silverstone. The FPA series features 300bhp turbocharged single-seaters that are all run by a single technical team and are kept as equal as possible. Famous drivers such as F1 and ChampCar star Justin Wilson, World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx and McLaren F1 test driver Gary Paffett have competed in FPA in the past.
With a 20-race season beginning on 7 April ahead of him, Nik is excited about racing in Europe for the first time in his career: "I am proud to earn the opportunity to represent Malaysia in the prestigious Formula Palmer Audi Championship. Ever since I started karting, it has been my dream to compete in Europe and race with the best."
With the coveted prize of a Formula 3 test on offer for the top three in the championship, Nik is aiming high: "My goal in 2007 is to learn as much as I can and win races. We are confident about achieving the goals and our early confirmation has proven that we're serious about this year. I am more focused than ever and I will work hard to achieve my ultimate goal of competing in Formula 1.
One round of the FPA Championship Nik is particularly looking forward to is the A1GP-supporting meeting at Brands Hatch from 27-29 April, where three FPA races will take place in front of huge crowds: "It's going to be a great crowd during the A1GP and to race in front of this international series is an opportunity for young drivers like me to show our race craft."
FPA series chief and former Formula 1 driver Jonathan Palmer was delighted to welcome Nik to the championship: "Nik is one of Asia's most promising young drivers and he will be tough to tame in 2007."
