Gerbi shines during first Formula Palmer Audi test
Frenchman Julien Gerbi set a quick pace on his first test at Bedford Autodrome.
One week after a test in Monza, the driver from Nice went to England to attend the 2009 season Formula Palmer Audi first official test.
Discovering the track and his new 360 hp car, Julien completed 80 laps, setting immediatly competitive laptimes and putting himself among the fastest drivers in the series.
At the end of the day, he had the opportunity to run some laps in the rain - first with slick tires, then with rain tires - allowing him to judge the power of the turbo engine in these conditions.
Julien Gerbi :
The car is really impressive, in that the turbo engine gives a very strong acceleration, and the Avon wide tires give it a lot of mechanical grip. I had never driven a car as powerful and I was quite anxious at the idea of managing the engine turbo torque. In the end, it did not take me more than ten laps to adapt my driving to this new car.
The young Frenchman also worked with his engineer, Mick Maggio, on other new things in the driving of this car, including the braking.
Mick Maggio, Formula Palmer Audi Engineer :
Julien successfully completed his test faultlessly, we were impressed not just by his speed but also by his maturity.
His experience previously in Barber Mazda and Formula 3 has obviously shaped him into a well-rounded driver. With this experience, along with his natural talent, we believe he can be very successful in Formula Palmer Audi this year.
Throughout the championship season he will also gain experience of using the Audi turbo-charged engine and working with the team, which will give him a good advantage if he moves into Formula 2 in 2010.
