Cresswell Bids For Home Glory
Formula Palmer Audi ace, Gideon Cresswell will be hoping for a repeat of his opening round victory when the FPA Championship returns to his home track of Brands Hatch next weekend (18-19 August).
Currently lying fifth in the driver standings, Maidstone-based Cresswell is determined to use his home advantage to re-ignite his championship challenge. "I'm quietly confident," he admitted." I wouldn't like to say that I'm going to win at Brands again because the competition is always tough in FPA. I'm sure some of the others are a bit worried about facing me around the Indy circuit though given my previous form there.
" My confidence doesn't really stem from the fact that Brands is my home track, it's more a question of knowing the circuit. The previous two meetings at Donington and Mondello were both held on circuits that were completely new to me and this put me at a bit of a disadvantage. When we go back to Donington in September, I'll have a much better chance now that I know the track and the line."
One problem Cresswell will be hoping to address will be that of his qualifying performances. Despite setting the twelfth and eighth fastest times at Mondello Park, the QAS-backed driver's main aim for the weekend is to move further up the grid." I hope I can do a better job at Brands Hatch than I've managed in my previous qualifying performances," he says." It's harder to overtake on the Indy circuit than it is to get past anywhere else. Saying that, I've got twenty-five laps to make a move if I need to."
Cresswell's 2001 Formula Palmer Audi campaign is backed by QAS Systems LTD and Kerry Ingredients.
