Press Release 102 Update Oct. 19th., 1997
Pedro's finest race
Pedro de la Rosa has finished 2nd in what has probably been his career's best race. He drove from 17th on the grid to a fine 2nd!!!
The 1997 Formula Nippon Champion started from an unusual 9th row place due to a penalty for a flag infringement during qualifying. However, De la Rosa had set fastest qualifying lap by a margin of almost 7/10 of a second.
In the race, the Spaniard managed to make up many places without losing time to Takagi and Fontana who were leading the race. So, on lap 10th, Pedro was already 4th, some ten seconds behind. Then, he began to close to the lead where Fontana had passed Takagi. On lap 20, De la Rosa was already second, and four seconds behind. Then 2 seconds when the Safety car helped to erase the difference.
When the Safety Car pulled out, De la Rosa overtook Fontana, but Argentinian close the door and both spun off. Both managed to continue in 3rd and 5th place with Kaneishi leading.
The final 10 laps were hectic, with Kageyama, Fontana, Mitsusada and De la Rosa fighting side by side in Fuji's long straight. Finally, it was De la Rosa who emerged to take 2nd not before reducing the leader's 8 seconds advantage to a mere 3.6 seconds gap. Pedro set fastest lap, of course.
