1997 Japanese GT Champion Michael Krumm tested a Nissan Skyline at the Motegi Road course on the 14rd and 15th of March 2000. As one of the four official Driver's with the Nissan Motorsport (Nismo) Team. Michael has been teamed with veteran Japanese Driver Ukyo Katayama for the 2000 season. The second Nismo entry is piloted by the 1999 GT Champion, Eric Comas and the Japanese driver Kageyama.
The Nismo Team have made a number of developments to the mighty Nissan Skylines for the 2000 season and at this time have only one full 2000 specification car available which was used by Eric Comas and Kageyama for the test. Michael and Ukyo used a 1999 car and concentrated on long distance runs on old tyres for the majority of the test.
Michael achieved the fourth fastest time of the event : 1'48.482 in the 1999 car. Eric Comas using the 2000 car set the second fastest time of the two day test : 1'48.160. The quickest time of the event was : 1'47.612 set by the Honda NSX of Nakano and Michigami.
Michael commented " We had a very good test, Eric was very close for most of the test to the times set by the Hondas and in fact was quickest on the first day, with the 2000 car and my best time on new tyres in the 1999 car was also very pleasing. For sure the competition is going to be tough again this year in the GT Championship, but once Ukyo and I have our 2000 car, which will be from the second race, we should be in a good position to challenge for results"
The second official test of the 2000 Formula Nippon Championship was held at the Motegi Road Course on the 17th and 18th March 2000. This is the final test before the first race of the season on March the 26th in Suzuka.
Michaels best time for the first day was achieved on old tyres as the team concentrated on some solid work with the Reynard 99L as they have now received the 2000 update kit. This was the first opportunity to test the 2000 specification for the team and Michael. Position 6: 1'36.811 on Lap 8 of 36 in the afternoon session. Using Old Tyres.
Saturday 18th March
Third fastest time of the day was Michaels reward for the work completed on the previous day, the time of 1'34.886 was set in the Morning session on lap 26 of 42. Michael set this time using the harder of the two tyre compounds available planning to switch to the softer tyres later in the day.
In the afternoon session Michael could only completed 5 laps before suffering a problem with first gear which precluded any further running during the day, as this is used five times in the lap of Motegi;
Michael in a very upbeat mood commented from Motegi " I am very pleased with the times we achieved here, especially as we always used the harder tyres. It was a shame that we did not get the chance to make a run on the soft tyres as. I am sure we would have been able to step up one or two places. Takagi and Tachikawa both set their quick times this afternoon on the soft tyres and for sure we would have also improved. But anyway it has been a very good test and now we have the first race in one week's time, which I am looking forward to. I have never before been as well prepared for a Formula Nippon season and I will be challenging from the first minute of qualifying".
