Ralf Schumacher hit the gold mine in Mine (ha-ha) to solidify his lead in the championship with only two rounds remaining. His teammate Hattori also moved up a notch in the points table.

Japan's best hope, Toranosuke Takagi, sunk deep in the qualifying order thanks to a gremlin in the gearing followed by an early off in the race having tried to recover positions.

Kazuyoshi Hoshino retired with the broken gearshift while Norberto Fontana suffered from the differential trouble.

Tom Kristensen, released from the Edenbridge IF3000 contract, was a surprise entry replacing singer/racer Masahiko Kondo who is recovering from the recent operation on his throat. The Dane finished ahead of his teammate Masahiko Kageyama in eighth with a two year old chassis.
