After setting the fastest lap ever recorded on Oran Park's 2.62 Kilometre Long Circuit, reigning Australian Driver's Champion Simon Wills claimed pole position for tomorrow's penultimate pair of CAMS Gold Star Championship races. Wills' time of 1:00.749s eclipsed Mark Larkham's 1991 qualifying record of 1:00.95s by 0.19s and equated to an average speed of 155.21km/h. It was also a full second under Larkham's nine-year old lap record.

With 17 points in hand over WA rookie Christian Murchison, Wills will be hoping to turn his pole position into a pair of wins tomorrow and could wrap up the championship if the cards fall his way. Murchison meanwhile, will be starting the first of tomorrow's pair of 17 lap races from the second row of the grid in third spot after a spin-afflicted session, which saw him rejoining late in the session and improve from fourth to third. Unfortunately, the NRC 'hot-shoe' missed out on improving further when he was the first driver to greet the chequered flag, just when he was about to commence a flier.

Last round winner Tim Leahey will start alongside Wills tomorrow after setting a best of 1:01.172s after an overnight engine change. Leahey will be hoping to use his big-horsepower unit to vault ahead of Wills tomorrow and has proven his capacity to withstand the advances of the Kiwi champ. Friday's fast man, Paul Dumbrell, was disappointed with fourth fastest - struggling for a clear lap. Equally as frustrated was Matthew Halliday who wound up an uncustomary fifth fastest ahead of the second NRC Racing machine of Dale Brede. Filling a close-knit mid-field bunch were Andy Booth (now driving the ex-Staff Ralt Australia 92D), LeRoy Stevenson and Steve Owen. Peter Hill wound up next in tenth as the first Silver Star runner, ahead of Terry Clearihan, Roger Oakeshott and Ian Peters.
