Seventy Percent Win Rate For Kelly

After yet another dominant display by Victorian eighteen-year-old Rick Kelly, the 2001 Holden Australian Drivers' Championship may very well be decided at the very next round of the series. Kelly again led all the way, despite the best efforts of Christian Murchison who almost out-dragged him on the run down to Turn One at the start of the race. Try as he might, and driving with minimal downforce, Murchison could do nothing about the 0.4s lap speed advantage displayed by Kelly and will need to win at Oran Park to keep his championship hopes alive.

Californian Emerson Newton-John backed up his fine morning performance with another strong third place on his return to the category and showed enough to be considered a threat in the remaining rounds. Peter Hill flew through the field for a fine fourth after enjoying another spirited battle with Canberra's Terry Clearihan and category returnee Chris Hocking. Hocking claimed the Silver Star spoils, proving his two-year lay-off has done little to slow him.

Behind Hocking in fifth was NSW's Alan Gurr, who had a torrid day after qualifying second fastest. A couple of spins put him to the back, but thereafter he recovered for some valuable points, showing good speed in the process. Clearihan's seventh, and second Silver Star spot, allowed him to close the points-gap to SS championship leader Ian Peters to just three with six races remaining. Peters came home eighth to maintain his unblemished finishing record, with all eleven drivers making it to the line in a supreme display of reliability.
