Current championship points-leader, Mildura's Rick Kelly, scored his third pole position of the year when he claimed the valuable front-row starting spot for tomorrow's pair of races for the fifth round of the 2001 Holden Australian Driver's Championship.
Melbourne's Calder Park circuit succumbed the to strenuous advances of Kelly and his dominant Birrana/ Holden Young Lions machine, with the talented youngster finishing the twenty-minute session 0.36s ahead of NSW's twenty-year-old Alan Gurr (Konica/ Telecell - Reynard 94D). Gurr surprised his rivals with some quick lappery and finished the session on a time that was a whopping 1.9s quicker than his previous best set during yesterday's official practice sessions.
Hocking Motorsport's Christian Murchison claimed third grid position after a spirited attempt at securing a front-row spot and showed remarkable consistency to record at least five 54.5s laps. Series returnee Californian Emerson Newton-John was fourth fastest, driving the second Ralt Australia entry and suffered a couple of spins on his way to a fastest time of 55.23s.
Peter Hill recorded a strong fifth fastest time just 0.1s behind 'Emmo' and had a rapidly advancing Chris Hocking with Roger 'The Doc' Oakeshott himself closing right in on Hocking's times towards the end of the session. Oakeshott claimed pole for the Silver Star runners, ahead of a fiercely squabbling pack consisting of, Ian Peters, Terry Clearihan, Rohan Carrig and Mark Ellis.
