Estoril, Portugal, 22nd April.- Tomas Scheckter (Vergani Racing) had a perfect weekend in the second round of the Open Telefonica series, by winning both races today at Estoril circuit. Scheckter, who dominated yesterday's qualifying practices by achieving both pole positions, has been surrounded in the podiums by Portuguese Manuel Giao and Frenchman Jonathan Cochet (first race) and Italian Andrea Belicchi and Cochet again in the second race. Franck Montagny (Epsilon by Graff) continues as series leader (62 points) ahead of Scheckter (54) and Rafael Sarandeses (44). Next round of series scheduled 13th May at Albacete, Spain.
Tomas Scheckter imposed a rhythm in the first race (lapping in low 33's) which was impossible to follow by his adversaries making his advantage increase lap by lap. In race 1, the shortest one (25-minute race), top-five final positions were the same as those in the previous starting grid. Montagny put some pressure on Belicchi fighting for fourth place, but the Italian controlled the situation. Nevertheless, in that period of the race Montagny did the fast lap, which is worth two points in the overall standings.
Start and pit stop were more decisive than ever in second race, specially for Portuguese Manuel Giao. Both Giao and Spaniard Burgueno lost some places right after the green lights, but things went even worse for the Portuguese, one of the candidates to win the series. The misunderstanding between Giao and his team forced him and team mate Paulo Alho to the pit stop... right at the same time! Giao's wheels were not ready -the team was waiting for Alho- and the Open Nissan 1999 runner-up lost all his chances to get to the podium at his home circuit. Scheckter kept the lead of the race 'tip-to-toe', being followed this time by Belicchi and Cochet, the Frenchman repeating a third place. Fantastic Cochet this weekend in his series debut: two third places, fast lap included in the second race. The fight between both Formula One test drivers (Scheckter for Jaguar and Cochet for Prost Acer) in the Open Telefonica appears to be really amazing. Next chapter to be written the 13th May at Albacete.
