Driver Berci Shlesinger loses life in Cancun

Mexican driver Berci Shlesinger died Saturday, July 14, 2001. Shlesinger was competing in a double race weekend on the street circuit of Cancún.

Thirty-seven year old Shlesinger raced in the Mexican F3 Championship in the Copa Corona series. He and teammate Jesús Silva drove for the Dynamic Motorsports Team.

The accident happened during the warm-up for the first race for which he had qualified 10th. While going at approximately 110 miles per hour, he went over a manhole cover. The cover was not secured and it came up and hit the car. Shlesinger was taken to the nearby hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Shlesinger's remains were flown to Mexico City. Sunday, July 15, he was buried in the Israelite cementery.
