This coming weekend marks the opening round of the Italian F3000 Championship at Vallelunga and American Derek Hill will be competing with the top-ranked Martello Racing Ltd. squad under the leadership of Andrew Chisolm. His team- mate is former Skip Barber Formula Dodge Race Series front-runner Jean Domenico Brusatan of Colombia.

Hill, son of 1961 World Driving Champion Phil Hill, was the winner of the 1997 Barber Dodge Pro Series Championship.

Since the winning the Barber Dodge Championship, Hill has gone on to race in both the Toyota Atlantic Championship as well as the Formula Palmer Audi Series in England.

"F3000 is a launch pad into either Formula 1 or Champ Cars," Hill said of decision to race in Italy. "Many people have done it before so it's obviously effective.

"We've both talked about it," he said in reference to the discussions he had with his father, who is still idolized by many in Italy from his World Championship days with Ferrari. "I've always wanted to race in Europe. When I got the opportunity, I took it, even though I know things are going to be tough, I want to commit to doing it."

Hill is hopeful that the Anglo-Italian team will propel him to prominence in the highly competitive Italian series, a move that he hopes will lead to a ride in the FIA F3000 series, one step below Formula 1.

Hill will split his time between London, England and Modena, Italy.
