Clarke bags pole as UK Formula Ford drivers dominate at Spa

Daniel Clarke took pole position for the latest round of the UK Formula Ford Championship at Spa-Francorchamps as the top drivers from the series filled the top seven places on the grid.

Racers from the Benelux Championship are competing against the UK regulars this weekend and the first three rows on the grid for tomorrow's first race are filled by the British series drivers.

Team JLR driver Clarke took pole early in the session and from then on it was a case of playing catch-up by the rest of the field. His team-mate, Charlie Kimball got under a tenth of a second away from him, but was unable to chip away enough time to snatch pole.

Indian driver Suk Sandher then put in a stunning lap to match Kimball's time to the last thousandth of a second, moving himself up to third on the grid in the process.

Current series leader Valle Makela had to settle for fourth on the grid for tomorrow's race. He got within two tenths of a second of Clarke but will have to work hard around the fast and flowing Grand Prix track if he is to step onto the top step of the podium in Belgium.

His Nexa Racing team-mate Yuya Sakamoto was half a second adrift in fifth place. However, he was almost beaten to the place by Sebastian Hohenthal who was only three-thousands of a second behind him by the end of the session.

Silverstone race winner Joe D'Agostino struggled to get onto the ultimate pace around Spa and will line up in seventh place. The next five grid slots are taken up by the Benelux racers, with Ryan Cannon the next UK runner, in 13th place.
