Donnelly returns to winner's circle at Knockhill
Charlie Donnelly took victory in the first race of the UK Formula Ford Championship at Knockhill this morning (May 16).
The Irishman blasted away from pole position and was never challenged for the lead over the 28 lap race. Valle Makela made a brilliant start from fourth place on the grid to be second at the end of the first lap.
Suk Sandher managed to hold on to third place as Daniel Clarke slotted into fourth. Sandher put Makela under pressure for a coupe of laps but on lap six Makela had broken away and Sandher had spun down to 11th. He eventually retired on lap 25 with damaged suspension.
Sebastian Hohenthal battled to keep Joe D'Agostino and Yuya Sakamoto behind him in fourth place. Sakamoto caught D'Agostino by surprise on lap 11 and moved into fifth and moved past Hohenthal five laps later and pulled away.
At the front though Donnelly never looked under pressure and cruised to his second victory of the season.
"I got a good start and I have to thank the guys in the team as the car is just so good here this weekend," said Donnelly. "I knew that we weren't the quickest car over a single lap here but it's over a full race distance that matters."
