UK Formula Ford Scholarship Champion D'Agostino readies for Festival
Kent, England -- Having already wrapped up the Scholarship Class Championship and a Top 5 position in the Overall Championship Joe D'Agostino wanted to use this past weekend's final UK Formula Ford Championship rounds at the Brands Hatch Indy circuit as a test and preparation for the Formula Ford Festival to be held on the 15th-17th of October.
Things for D'Agostino went fair during testing but the American could not seem to find a rhythm with the circuit and then went on to struggle in Qualifying, only managing 11th position for Race 1 and 10th position for Race 2, being .3s off of pole.
For the start of Race 1 the weather conditions were anyone's guess and the majority of the field decided for wet tires. However, D'Agostino and his team decided to take a gamble and run on slick tires in hopes that the circuit would begin to dry out. With six laps to go D'Agostino began to lap .5s faster than the rest of the field but another passing shower then dashed any advantage had as D'Agostino lost grip and fought hard to keep it on track. D'Agostino and Team JLR's gamble only moved them up one spot to finish 10th position overall, setting fastest race lap in Scholarship class for the 12.
Race 2 and the weather conditions were full wet, after a great start D'Agostino immediately found his footing and rhythm moving up well through the field. After a brief safety car period D'Agostino pushed to move up to 5th position, the following lap D'Agostino set up 5th place Suk Sandher on the front straight and just when D'Agostino went to pull out Sandher's gearbox failed and locked up. The deceleration left D'Agostino with no time to react and the two cars made contact severely damaging D'Agostino's left-front suspension. D'Agostino slowly limped home determined to finish the last race of the season and crossed the line in 13th place.
"I am glad after struggling in the beginning to find a rhythm and pace around Brands Hatch that in the last race I showed we were quick. It was a little frustrating we did not start with the pace we ended with, but the most important thing is that we are in great shape for the Festival. I would like to thank Team JLR and my mechanic, Kevin, for a fantastic season and a big thanks to all of my sponsors whom without, this year would not have been possible."
After being strong all year D'Agostino finished in 5th position in the Overall Championship Class and has been crowned the 2004 UK Formula Ford Scholarship Class Champion with 10 wins, 11 podiums, 10 pole positions, 13 fastest race laps and 1 lap record. The next race for D'Agostino is the famous UK Formula Ford Festival at Brands-Hatch Indy circuit the 15th-17th of October.
D'Agostino would like to thank Team JLR and all of his sponsors: Arai Helmets, Skip Barber Racing School, Sparco, The Mayes Group, and all of his personal sponsors.
