Makela Sneaks Win Number Seven at Castle Combe
Valle Makela took the lead of round nine of the UK Formula Ford Championship with just two laps remaining to clinch his seventh victory of the season.
A restart was needed after Charlie Donnelly ended up in the tyre wall at Quarry corner on the opening lap. At the second time of asking Daniel Clarke got a great start and moved into third place behind Hohenthal and Makela.
Hohenthal took on immense pressure from Makela in the early stages. A safety car period allowed Clarke to close the gap on the two leaders. American Charlie Kimball made the most of the re-start by driving round the outside of the leading trio and to the front of the field.
With just three laps to go it started to rain and the slippery conditions caught out Kimball. Makela made a daring move around the outside of him at Tower corner and two corners later he had spun down to tenth place.
Yuya Sakamoto crossed the line in third place. Confusion over some overtaking during the safety car period meant that Hohenthal initially thought he had the place.
"I was pleased when it started to rain as I knew what my car would be like on slicks in the wet and knew I had a chance," said Makela. "I went around the outside of Kimball and saw him in my mirrors, but didn't see what happened to him when he spun," he added.
Neil Doran picked up fifth place and Ryan Cannon took an impressive sixth.
Indian driver Suk Sandher was the first retirement of the race and newcomer Basil Shabaan suffered an early exit when he went off the circuit on lap two.
