Ravier the fastest in Albacete; Zonta with problems on engine.
Heat has been the main guest in World Series first practices in Albacete's circuit, 3rd round of the championship.
Albacete, 21 June 2002 ? Jean Christophe Ravier (Epsilon by Graff) rode his way into his best position this year and came out on top at the end of the two first free practice sessions at the Albacete Circuit. The runaway championship leader, Brazilian Ricardo Zonta (Gabord Competición), suffered engine problems and had to rode with his teammate car Tuka Rocha in the second practice session. Drivers have suffered blazing heat: 40 ºC and 60ºC track surface.
The Albacete circuit is holding the 3rd round of the Telefonica World Series by Nissan, which gathers almost 60 drivers from 15 different countries in a very ambitious program. Three different categories, a unique concept, are presented with the World Series (415 HP), the Formula Nissan 2000 (230 Hp) and the Spanish Formula Junior Championship (114 hp).
French Ravier has been the fastest dirver during the two sessions and set 1:19.284, just 0.085 seconds ahead of Portuguese Andre Couto (Vergani Racing). Peter Sundberg (Tata RC Motorsport) and Bas Leinders (KTR) ended the first day of practive in 3rd and 4th position.
Franck Montagny (Racing Engeenering) and Ricardo Zonta weren^Òt involved in the battle for first places. Brazilian changed the engine (you have to if win two consecutive races or three alternate) but this didn^Òt work well (one of the six cilinders failed). Zonta is running with a new engine in the Saturday qualifying session, but today had to drive with his teammate car.
In the Formula Nissan 2000 category, Matteo Bobbi (Vergani Racing) has been the fastest driver (1:1:22.710) ahead of championship challenger Santiago Porteiro (Repsol Meycom) six tenth of a second behind. Gelete Nieto and Mathias Lauda, both competing in the Epsilon By Graff Team, 9th and 10th almost two seconds from the leader.
Tomorrow, the Telefonica World Series by Nissan will celebrate all the Qualifying sessions.
