FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

FT. COLLINS, COLORADO Revamping of chassis and engine rules is in the offing for the American IndyCar Series as the series begins its ninth season with a predominance of oval track races in its 1996 schedule.

With the advent of the Indy Racing League and its emphasis on oval racing, AIS will follow similar guidelines in their rules package and emphasize racing on oval tracks. This will be an advantage to drivers who wish to move to the IRL and the Indy 500, as well as those teams running IRL races who wish to run in AIS races. The 1996 season reflects a schedule that is compatible with the IRL schedule and includes five oval races and the very high-speed road course at Willow Springs, CA.

Naturally-asperated V-8 engines will still be the dominant engine in AIS, but AIS rules turbos in V-6 and V-8 configurations and V-6 naturally-asperated engines. The diversity of engines and chassis make AIS appealing to competitors and keep the cost of Indy car racing affordable. This affordability, plus the experience gained by drivers and mechanics alike in Indy car racing, has been the goal of the series since its inception.
