A New Season - A New Beginning for Oberg Motorsports
The preseason PDG test session Oberg Motorsports attended, really gave Mike and his crew chief, Cory Lambert, confidence for a solid run at the opening round of the Traxxas Off-Road Championship series presented by AMSOIL.
The Friday afternoon practice session saw the #80 AMSOIL truck search for more rear bite. The team made swaybar and spring changes looking to get more grip.
The qualifying run, the one time this season, landed Mike Oberg in seventh place.
The start of the twenty lap event saw Mike trying to conserve his tires, and trying to keep the leaders in sight. After the lap eleven mandatory caution, Mike got more aggressive looking to make his move. On lap thirteen, the #80 AMSOIL truck got tangled with another truck causing his hood to fold back into his line of sight and on top of his air filter. The banging on the air filter kept pushing on the throttle cable until it came apart, ending his day early. Official race results gave Mike Oberg a thirteenth place finish.
"I picked up the pace after the mandatory yellow," stated Mike Oberg. "Then another freak thing happens tonight. Go figure. We don't have much work for tomorrow. We will get back on track."
Early Saturday morning, the rain began falling hard on the Fort Worth area. Finally the weather cleared around 3pm, but now the race track had a small lake in the third turn. Somehow the track crew drained the water and scrapped most of the mud from the track. Meanwhile, the crowd in the stands was gradually building throughout the evening. At 9pm the race trucks were lining up giving the 5000 off-road fans a show they would never forget.
The start had Mike Oberg back in the thirteenth spot based upon his previous night's finish. The race track was in good shape considering what it looked like earlier in the day, but unless you were in the lead, mud would be an issue for all the drivers.
When the green flag fell, the #80 AMSOIL Chevy looked to stay clear of any mishaps the first few laps. Mike guided his Kumho Tire Chevy past several trucks without an incident, and at the end of the twenty lap event, Mike Oberg finished a hard fought seventh place.
"Starting in the back was a real disadvantage," stated Mike Oberg. "The mud wasn't terrible, but it did cause visibility problems tonight. All in all we had a good run from the back of pack. We just ran out of laps, before we could get that top five finish."
After two rounds of racing in the Traxxas TORC Series presented by AMSOIL, Mike Oberg is in eleventh place in the PRO-2WD standings.
You can watch all the high flying action from the opening weekend of the TORC series, Sunday, May 24, at 11am eastern on ESPN2.
Next race for Oberg Motorsports is Rounds 3 & 4 at Perris Auto Speedway in Perris, California.
