Mike Savage finished Third Overall in the 2006 Lucas Oil Sportsman 2 Championship!
After winning Round 8 in Bark River, Mike Savage and his entire crew/family were looking to keep the pressure on as the final weekend of the CORR Sportsman series entered Crandon International Raceway. "We knew that a bit of luck was need to grab the top spot for the points, but you need never know what the future will bring," commented Mike Savage.
Saturday - American Axle Round 9
The start saw Mike Savage jump into fourth place trying to chase down third place #277 Don Williams. With two laps to go, the oil light came on in the dash and his Autometer pressure gauge displayed no oil pressure. Quickly Mike shut the engine down. At the finish, Mike was credited with a seventh place finish.
Once the truck made its way to the hauler, the crew quickly found the culprit, a cracked oil line fitting. The fix was quick and simple. Hopefully, the temporary oil loss didn't damage they only engine. They came to Crandon without a backup motor.
Sunday - American Axle Round 9
The landrush start had Mike Savage making a clean run through Turn One with only Wandasega and Baudoux in front of him. On Lap 2 the race was red flagged due to an accident involving Bob Gersmehl. Fortunately the truck took the brunt of the collision, and Bob will be back to race another day.
The single file restart kept Mike Savage and his #267 Savage Construction, Kumho Tires Ford F-150 in the third position. In fact the top three positions stayed constant for the remaining eight laps. At the finish is was Baudoux first, Wandasega second, and Mike Savage third.
The podium finish placed Mike Savage third overall in the final standings of the 2006 Lucas Oil CORR Sportsman 2 division.
The last two years Mike Savage has finished third in the championship standings. The 2006 season included five podium finishes, with one victory in Bark River.
